Designed by Chris Bangle (Fiat style center) and the Pininfarina style center, the Fiat Coupé is a sports car whose platform is based on the VSS project used on various models of the Fiat group including Alfa Romeo GTV and other models. In anticipation of the installation of powerful engines in the development phase, the frame was designed with good torsional stiffness, the suspensions were particular, with staggered helical spring with fixed attachment, in this way the load was transferred directly to the body, at the rear was a solution with pulled arms and stabilizer bar was adopted which performed an anti-dive function in acceleration and braking. It was offered in various engines, exclusively petrol, from 1,800 cm³ and 2,000 cm³, also in the turbo version. The car was assembled by Pininfarina in its own factories. The engines were located in a transverse position, the traction was on the front wheels and the 5-speed gearbox. The 190 horsepower turbo engine allowed the coupé (as proven by numerous car magazines of the time) to accelerate in the classic 0-100 km / h in about 7 seconds, demonstrating better performance than those officially declared by Fiat (7.5 seconds) , the declared maximum speed was 225 km / h but in the test carried out by the magazine Quattroruote it touched 238 km / h. Given the high performance, the supercharged versions were also fitted as standard with a viscous joint mechanical self-locking differential (Ferguson) called Viscodrive to improve driving and limit winding during sudden acceleration or loss of grip on one of the two drive wheels. It was one of the few sports front-wheel drives of the time to boast a limited-slip differential fitted as standard.
